Trench Cake – Wed 29 Oct 2014

Venue: York Castle Museum

Learn how to bake ‘Trench Cake’ in the museum kitchen this half term. There will be demonstrations and even a chance to taste this dense fruit cake which was baked by families during the war as a morale-boosting treat to send to soldiers at the front.

Fire Away! – Wed 29 Oct 2014

Drop in session to create your own mini Roman catapult, based on our nearly life size replica! Then try firing a pea size ballista ball at the Iron Age fort to test its fire power.

Living Like a Legionary – Wed 29 Oct 2014

Discover more about life as a Legionary and handle real objects from the museum’s collections, which would have been used by Roman soldiers living in Eboracum (Roman York).

Medal Making – Wed 29 Oct 2014

Create your own medal using metallic paper and art materials, or have a go at drawing your medal onto our special ‘shrinkle’ plastic sheet; take it home to shrink in your oven and produce your very own wartime medal. Guidance and instructions given!

One Man’s War – Wed 29 Oct 2014

Meet Great War veteran Lieutenant Frank Wood (actor, Chris Cade) and play a part in his story.

Be recruited into his regiment: the East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry and set sail for Alexandria.

Help him relive his experiences of the Middle Eastern Theatre of War, including defending the Suez Canal, fighting the Battles of Gaza and being part of the last great cavalry charge in Britain’s military history! But first, be trained and prepared for the desert.

About Yvette Hawkins

Yvette Hawkins is a British paper artist of English-South Korean origin who makes installations and sculptural objects using books, maps and other found materials, utilising a variety of techniques that include cutting, folding, stitching and bookbinding.

Yvette trained at Glasgow School of Art and graduated from Newcastle University in 2007. She has had numerous group and solo exhibitions within the UK.

​Yvette also works to commission and has work in collections in Italy, Australia, Japan and USA. Her work has been featured in books and magazines and was included in Book Art: Iconic Sculptures and Installations Made From Books (2011). Yvette is currently represented by Globe Gallery, UK and is lead artist on Book Apothecary: The Travelling Museum of Artist Books.
