- Description
- Female figure facing dexter with long and wavy golden hair which covers her entire body. She has a halo and holds a palm branch in her left hand (as in YORYM : 2009. 402) and clutches a clasped book in her right hand. The figure has carefully painted facial features (comparable to YORYM : 2009. 184 and YORYM : 2009. 402) and large hands with long fingers. A strange structure can be seen at the bottom sinister to the figure, which may be a plinth or platform, or some other architectural form. The black letter inscription ‘egipciaca’ is painted towards the lower portion of the figure. All the glass in the figure appears original. The figure is St Mary of Egypt, whose long hair is said to have covered her nakedness and protected her chastity. The panel has been releaded and placed against a plain rectangular quarried background. The figure may have been originally one large piece of glass, or two medium-sized pieces. The words ‘MIDDLE ‘ and ‘MIDDLE’ have been inscribed into the top lead calme .
