Great War Exhibition Takes Centre Stage Online

York Museums Trust has produced a special online exhibition of the key items from the new exhibition 1914: When the World Changed Forever, ahead of this year’s Remembrance Sunday.

Through its partnership with the Google Cultural Institute, York Museums Trust has created the online exhibition to share key parts of its First World War collection to a global audience.

The exhibition features detailed imagery of some of the more unusual and brutal items on display at the exhibition which opened at York Castle Museum 100 years to the day that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, sparking the outbreak of the First World War.

E-Communications Co-ordinator Mike Linstead said:

“We are delighted to be able to share this exhibition through the Google Cultural Institute. Since it opened in June the exhibition has been a terrific success and we would like to extend its reach to a much wider audience.

“We have some incredible and unique items in our collection so we felt it was important to showcase them through an online exhibition, particularly in the run up to Remembrance Sunday.”

The online exhibition includes items such as a Horse Gas Mask, a Zeppalarm created by a York-based engineer in 1916 and an extremely rare Victoria Cross which features the blue Naval Ribbon.

The exhibition can be found on the Google Cultural Institute website here.
