Christmas Special of our Relaxed Opening Event at York Castle Museum Planned for 11 December 2016

28 November 2016

York Castle Museum will be holding another Relaxed Opening event on Sunday 11 December 2016 to enabled those who would prefer a quieter visit to our museum to enjoy our Christmas decorations and activities.

During the event, museum staff will put the lights on full and turn off all the sound effects to provide a a less overwhelming environment. Visitors will still be able to see all the galleries, but there will be no dark areas and no sudden sounds. Guides in Victorian costume will be on Kirkgate and there will still be films in the prison gallery, but staff will be able to tell visitors beforehand of what to expect.

There is seating provided around the museum and a quiet space will be available suitable for autistic visitors.

Please note that as it is Christmas there may be a larger number of visitors than usual and the special activities will continue to take place. The museum guides will be happy to provide guidance during your visit, or please contact York Museums Turst ahead should you have any questions.

The museum also have visual stories available online for visitors with autism and their carers – these can be found on the York Castle Museum Access page here.

The event is free for visitors with autism, dementia, visual impairments or similar issues. Carers and children under 16 will also be admitted for free. Accompanying members of a group will be admitted for £5, and standard admission is £10. There is no need to book ahead.
