History in the Making – A Summer of Crafts at the Yorkshire Museum

Summer 2016 at the Yorkshire Museum saw ‘History in the Making’ – a chance for visitors to carve and mould their way through history!

As the museum is home to some of the most impressive Roman artefacts in Britain, this was a great opportunity for visitors to be inspired by our collections and have a go at making a sculpture themselves.

There was a different material to try each week – soap, maize, junk and clay. Materials were provided and staff were on hand to help those who needed it.

Emma Williams, Assistant Curator of Science and Archaeology Learning, said:

“I love seeing examples of what people have made. Their imagination amazes me and the time taken to create some of these sculptures really shows. I am guessing they have been made by people of all ages so it’s great to think that our summer activities appealed to adults as well. Thanks to everyone who came, we hope you enjoyed it.”

Here are some of our favourites from the junk and clay sessions…
