Washing the Victorian way in our Spotless! workshop at York Castle Museum
We welcome school groups to York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum and the Yorkshire Museum & Gardens and offer help and advice to parties who wish to visit.
Each venue offers a programme of education workshops for groups from Early Years up to Key Stage 2, covering art, history and science across the sites.
You can download our Primary Schools programme 2011/12 here.

An award-winning service
In 2011 the service was again awarded the Sandford Award for Heritage Education.
Here's what the judges had to say about our venues:
York Art Gallery contains important works of art in a newly refurbished gallery that is a great space for learning. Children learn to engage with art at a deeper level than simply gazing at paintings. The staff are enthusiastic and the sessions they lead are well thought through. Pupils will leave the Gallery enlightened, enthused and motivated about art.
York Castle Museum is a superb social history museum with world-renowned displays, enthusiastic and well-motivated staff. Schools that come to the Castle for a workshop session will get a high quality product and their pupils will have a memorable experience. They will learn far more than they realise they are learning – the ultimate goal for all museum educators.
The Yorkshire Museum has excellent collections of national importance, reflecting York’s important Roman and medieval history. It also has a first class natural history collection. The educational programmes are varied and well designed, and delivered by committed and highly capable staff. There is much in the Museum that delivers the ‘wow’ factor for children and this is an invaluable resource for schools.
